Happy earth day to everyone! Although many of the big celebrations were held this weekend, I hope everyone is finding a small way to benefit our earth today (and everyday!). I had some leftovers for lunch (instead of having to throw the food out in a couple of days) and some local seasonal strawberries which were oh so delicious. Later this afternoon I’m going to watch some tv shows that are focused on the day and might have some tips on “green” living and a special on OPB. There are so many simple things people can do to live sustainably. I admit, I am far from perfect, but I try to improve everyday.
However, I have mixed feelings about this green movement that has really caught speed over the last year. I think it’s great there has been dialog about buying organic earth friendy products, but sometimes I wonder if some of the big companies are just jumping on the bandwagon and labeling things as green to satiate their customers. This is why it is still important to read labels even when the product screams that it is organic or green. I know that a lot of people get frusterated with all of the conflicting information, or even just the effort it takes to figure everything out, so my best advice is to use the 3Rs. My favorite artist and role model Jack Johnson sang a catchy little tune about it.
Also education is also key. Once you realize it’s an important issue, educating yourself is probably the best way to get involved. But I also think educating others is important as well. This is one of the many reasons I love my job as an environmental/conservation educator. I think teaching kids about the amazing animals and planet and how they can help to protect it all can really make a difference. I love this earth and want to do all that I can to make it a beautiful place to live. I hope that you feel the same and find a personal way to celebrate our planet.
